Older Toddler Program

(18 months -36 months)

Ratio: Will vary from class to class. The younger class ratio will generally be 1 to 5. The older classes will be between 1 to 6 and 1 to 8 depending on the group dynamics and the needs of the children.

The older toddler age is a stage of exploration, discoveries and independence. In this class, we build on the children’s emerging independence and self help skills. Their environment is carefully prepared to encourage developmentally appropriate exploration and discoveries in all areas of development using the Dr. Maria Montessori’s Practical Life activities, language, pre-math and sensorial materials. Early Montessori activities such as Knobbed cylinders and other sensorial materials are presented for hands on, self paced, sequential learning. A sequence of pre-math activities is introduced to begin the understanding of mathematical concepts. Naming colors and shapes is a daily part of the children’s routine. Art is included in the choices children make at the various learning centers that are carefully prepared by their teacher. Children are constantly choosing materials that require problem solving. The idea of using the “mat” to do floor activities is addressed through “Montessori lessons.” Parts and type of flowers and animals are discovered by the children through observation, reading, and many hands-on activities. Body parts are named. The concept of over and under, up and down, high and low are all explored. Children are exposed to music, movement, and songs in English and other languages.
What children can do for themselves safely they are allowed to do. Self toileting is introduced in this classroom for children who show an interest.
Part time schedules may be available for this age group. Older Toddlers/Early Preschoolers are required to be dropped off before 9:30 am.
